G recently asked me to overhaul a replica catapult.


This thing is about the size of a large motorbike and mostly made of oak. I'm told it's an accurate replica, though deliberately non-working (the trigger mechanism doesn't function). I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say who the client is but some of you may have seen it on display in a world-famous museum. It lives outdoors and had gone rather black from mould.

After several hours of scraping with a sharp knife (sandpaper not historically appropriate) and a coat of linseed oil it came up quite nicely:


The bottom of one of the legs had rotted so I cut it off and joined a new piece on:
