Beech Box

Over the past few months I've done quite a few small wood-carving and turning projects; mostly birthday and Christmas gifts for people. I'd like to show you some of them, so I'll be posting a series of photos over the next few days.

This is a small box that I carved from a burr beech log for my middle niece's birthday present while staying on the Isle of Eigg:

It's about 6" long. The bottom is hollowed out of a single piece of wood. The dark oval shape above her initials is a knot that goes right through to the bottom. I sanded it very smooth and finished it with a few coats of Danish oil and then beeswax furniture polish (gives a sort of satin gloss and a nice smell). The top surface of the lid is slightly spalted as well as burred. The curved bottom is a deliberate part of the design - it doesn't rock on a flat surface.
